Vail skiing conditions January 31

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Sorry about the lack of vail skiing condition updates, but when the snow gets good (as it has been this past week) we don’t have a lot of time for pictures and posting blog updates.  We have to hit the slopes, right now.  That is just the way it goes.  So anyhow…..the skiing has been fantastic this week but we had some warm and sunny weather this past Friday and Saturday.  What that means is that Friday and Saturday skiing was GREAT but by Sunday it got pretty icy.  We either need more sun or new snow.  The bumps are staying soft on the northern facing slopes such as Vail front side and Blue Sky Basin, but the south facing Back Bowls were no good by this Sunday.  But don’t despair, it started snowing this Sunday afternoon as we were up on the mountain.  We expect 2-4 inches between now and Monday night.   Chris R.

Antlers at Vail wine and cheese party

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Virtually every Monday during the winter the Antlers at Vail has a complimentary wine & cheese party for our guests.  It starts at 5:30pm and lasts for around an hour.  We want everyone to feel free to stop on by for some wine & appetizers.  It is a great chance to mingle with other guests and Antlers staff and to exchange stories from the day’s adventures out on Vail Mountain.

Vail ski conditions January 22 and 23 and 24 and the 25th

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

Update: January 25, 10 more inches of snow reported at 6am.  They say we’ve received 30 inches of snow over the last 7 days.  Check out the Vail Cam for a look.

Update:  January 24, 9 more inches of snow reported at 6am.  It has been snowing hard all morning.  Finally some serious powder !

Update:  January 23, 4 more inches of snow reported, snowing pretty good outside.

January 22, Vail ski conditions are certainly getting freshened up this week .  We had 5 inches a few days ago and then a few inches each of the last couple of days.  We are still looking and hoping for that big dump this weekend and we’ll certainly keep you up to speed.   Here are some pictures from Wednesday when they reported 5 inches.  It was 5 inches up on the upper 1/2 of the mountain but more like 2-3 inches from Chair 2 on down.  Here we are on Northwoods.  It was lightly snowing Friday mid-day when this was posted.

McCoy Park cross country skiing near vail

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

If you are here for a week and want to try something different, head on over to Beaver Creek’s McCoy Park for some cross country skiing.  Once you arrive at the Beaver Creek Resort (15 minutes from Vail), you pay for your nordic trails pass at the Beaver Creek nordic center (base of the Strawberry Park ski lift), then catch a ride up the Strawberry Park lift to access the nordic trails.  These nordic trails are way up high at the Beaver Creek Resort so the air is thin, but the solitude is worth it.  Chris R.

Vail’s Newest, Hottest Song

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

My golfing buddy Allan Finney who plays the drums (among other things) with our friend and jazz great Tony Gulizia, sent me this new tune yesterday about local legend Lindsey Vonn.  Allan’s wife, Nancy Gage, wrote the lyrics. It’s gonna be HUGE, but you heard it here first!

Alan Finney

This is the same little ditty with Allan on the vocals instead of Tony (it takes a few seconds to load).

Here are the boys with Kathy Morrow in December on local channel  TV8.

Kathy played last year at the Learning Palooza of the Vail Symposium (for which the Antlers is the Official Hotel).  Each of these great musicians play all over town … together and separately.  You should come check them out.
