Annapurna, the Antlers Puma

Our friend and fellow Vail Symposium board member, Jay Huffard, recently sold his house in Minturn.  Perched outside was a bronze mountain lion originally sculpted by Edith Huffard, Jay’s mother! Rather than leave the sculpture there, Jay would like to sell it and donate the proceeds 50/50 to the Symposium and the Minturn Community Fund.  You gotta love that!

Annapurna 1

Since it wasn’t going to get much attention in a remote neighborhood of Minturn, the Antlers agreed to host this puma on our property, overlooking Gore Creek and the bike bath.  We named her Annapurna, after the mountain in Nepal.

Annapurna 2

While she may only be ours temporarily, we’re secretly hoping that someone will make a $6,000 donation and leave her here permanently … or at least indefinitely.  Either way, Anna is one of a limited edition of ten, and others have sold for more than $12,000.

We’re also wondering if she’ll keep away the deer and other wildlife that seem to frequent our back yard.

Featured Antlers at Vail Residence

One of the joys of staying at the Antlers at Vail is that the condominiums are true vacation homes. Each homeowner has put forth the effort to make their condo a comfortable home for guests to enjoy. In the second installment of this new blog series we feature the homeowner of a 1-bedroom Antlers at Vail residence, and let them tell you a little about what it is they love about the Antlers.

Jim & Diana have owned a home at the Antlers at Vail since 1992. In 2010 the family took the opportunity to purchase the condominium next to theirs when it became available. It was a studio condominium in need of significant upgrades. After much deliberation Jim & Diana committed to a complete renovation that included moving walls to convert the studio into a 1-bedroom condominium with bunk beds. The kitchen was redesigned to move the sink and dishwasher to create a more user-friendly configuration. An old pot-belly fireplace made way for a new modern fireplace. New electrical and lighting was installed throughout. And, high end finishes included travertine tile for floors and the bathroom, granite for the countertops and stainless steel appliances. Their investment produced a luxurious vacation home for Antlers at Vail guests to enjoy, and raised the home rating from a silver to platinum level.

Owner Q & A

What motivated you to make the Antlers at Vail your vacation home in Vail?
Originally the beauty of Vail and variety of skiing attracted us to the Vail area. We have skied the East Coast, the Pyrenees and Alps, but nothing compares to Vail; Nothing is even close.  And, of course, the proximity of the Antlers to the slopes is extremely ideal. We love the ambiance of the village.

What is special about your Antlers vacation homes?
Our entire family has enjoyed many vacations to our Vail home. Over the years our children developed friendships with Antlers staff members, and we look forward to our grandchildren doing the same. The excellent management, employees and service at the Antlers are what make our visits to Vail special. Diana continues to show our appreciation by delighting the Antlers with her famous authentic Greek Baklava every holiday season.

A.t.A.Turns….Progress

Some interesting and telling pictures taken through the week that I would like to share.  The focus this past week has not been on any one thing in particular, but rather everyone staying ahead of everyone else. Contractors are following each other from unit to unit and everything remains on schedule.  The coordination to this point has been flawless.

Windows and sliding glass patio doors were certainly part of the weeks activities.

As the Antlers Turn….Pictures Tell Stories

It’s fast and furious around here, the remodels are moving ahead as planned, and on schedule.  We have evolved from furniture storage and demolition to welcoming various crews to to get started on abatement, painting, plumbing, electrical, fireplace installation and tile work.  Here are a few picks that show some of the progress.

(An aside….It’s not all a construction zone in the Valley.  Spring has sprung and the Sun is shining, while the Aspens are budding, the Evergreens are pollinating, the Flowers popping, Fish are jumping and the Bears are yawning.  All the while the Joggers are jogging, the Bikers are biking and the Golfers are golfing.  This is a glorious time of year.)          Greg

Vail Insider: May is for Charity Golf Tournaments

At first glance it may seem that not much is going on in Vail this month, but dig a little deeper and you will find that is not the case. May is full of fun events here in Vail. Last week the 2014 Vail Beaver Creek Mountain Bike Race Series kicked off. And, between the school year wrapping up and Vail golf courses opening, May is the month to have fun and play charity golf tournaments to benefit local children.

This weekend (May 3) sees the return of the 2nd Annual Vail Derby Party! Sponsored by Bulleit Bourbon, and hosted by The Sebastian Vail, this is guaranteed to be a good time and proceeds benefit Children’s Garden of Learning.

May features many charity golf tournaments in Vail.

I am aware of five charity golf tournaments in May but would not be surprised if there are many more that I don’t know about.

May 17 the Eagle Vail Golf Club hosts its first Community Golf Tournament! Sponsored by the POA, the 10-hole tournament will have a shotgun start at 4pm followed by dinner, drinks and prizes, and is the best value around.

May 22 Eagle County Charter Academy will hold its 14th annual golf tournament at Sonnenalp Golf Club. This fun tournament has been voted as the best golf tournament in the Vail Valley.

May 23 Stone Creek Charter holds their golf tournament at the spectacular Red Sky Ranch Golf Club.

May 26 the Beaver Creek Resort Company holds a golf tournament concluding Blues Brews & BBQs, which will benefit MS Can Do.

May 30 is the Eagle Chamber Screaming Eagle Golf Tournament. Proceeds will go towards scholarships.

Of course, the end of May sees the return of the iconic events for which Vail is known. Feast Vail and Blues Brews & BBQs both bring the valley back to life Memorial Day weekend with their jam-packed schedules of culinary events and entertainment. And then, June starts off with a bang with the GoPro Mountain Games, of which the Antlers at Vail hotel is proud to once again be a sponsor hotel.
