Complimentary use of snowshoes now at the Antlers

Wednesday, December 19th, 2012

There is more than one way to enjoy the snow here in Vail. At the Antlers we are now offering free use of snowshoes to our guests. Take a pair of our new snowshoes out for a light Vail snowshowl on the bike path or for a vigorous walk up Vail Mountain. Want suggestions on where to go?  Here are some great options;

1. The Beaver Creek Snowshoe Adventure Series continues on Sunday, January 6th.  Register HERE! (Fun for all abilities, beginners included.)

2.  Looking for a unique Vail experience or a kid friendly activity in Vail?  Look no further than Moonlight Vail Snowshoe Tours!  Tours depart from the Discovery Center at Eagle’s Nest (top of the Eagle Bahn gondola in Lionshead) and are available on January 18, 19, 20 & 21 and February 15, 16, 17 & 18 from 7-8:30pm.  Learn astronomy and the habits of nocturnal animals while you snowshoe though the pristine silence of the moonlit mountains.  (Reservations recommended.)

3. How about a full moon snowshoe with a Vail local?  Stop by the front desk and ask our staff.  There are a lot of great ideas out there, but we think the best one is to ask us…that way you always get something personal!

4.  Looking to connect with the solitude and beauty of the mountains in a more laid back way?  Grab a set of our snowshoes and head up Vail mountain at dusk, take a leisurely stroll along the Vail Golf course starting at the Vail Nordic Center, get off the grid with a hike at Vail Pass, or take a short drive to Meadow Mountain in nearby Minturn (be sure to stop by the most historic Vail Valley restaurant/bar at The Minturn Saloon).

However you choose to enjoy this great winter activity, always be safe.  For a few helpful tips for your journey, click HERE.

Happy trails!

Chair 11 opens!!!!

Saturday, December 15th, 2012

More terrain opens Friday 14th at Vail.

Jacquie and I had fresh tracks on Prima Friday afternoon.  Chair 11 opened with Riva Ridge, Prima, Pronto, Northstar, Northwoods, South rim, North rim and Gandy Dancer (watch for the rollers).  Its fast and fun right now.  Vail only recorded 2″ from the storm last night but over cast skies and flurries are looking promising today.  I will be headed out this afternoon for some turns with our guest if anyone is on the hill and wants to join me.  I suggest a ski with some width.  Have fun and enjoy the GREAT snow!

Big snow in Vail

Thursday, December 13th, 2012

The snow fell hard Saturday and Monday night.  Vail measured a foot of snow that we desperately needed to open terrain.  Vail is working around the clock to get more terrain open daily.  Tuesday Janet and I ventured out not expecting much, but were pleasantly surprised.  We made our way up chair 8 and were cruising along the cat-walk just in time to get fresh tracks on lower ledges.  Half way down we both stopped and giggled.  “This is AMAZING, I wish I had my powder skis.”  We made our way to the new Gondola, at the top we were shocked to see both chair 3 and 4 open.  We rushed over to chair 4 and eyed up the open terrain, changing our minds 3 times with what to ski,  we opted for power line and continued laps on Zot, Hunky Dory, Cappuccino, Espresso, Whistle Pig, Swings-ville, South look ma, and chair 4 Cliff area (cliff are not open).  I was exhausted by 2:00 and need to save energy for the gym.  I hopped on chair 3 and rode the ridge to find Lodgepole, Berries, Avanti, Pickaroon and Columbine were all open, I took my favorite run, ledges, all the way down.  What a great day.   I am so excited to ski this season.  Thank you snow gods for this storm and more storms to come.

Students Shoulder to Shoulder

I will act as if what I do makes a difference

This Vail Symposium poster hangs in our office and we at the Antlers try to live by those words.  They help guide many of our decisions, including our efforts to be good corporate citizens.  We are quite proud of our record in that regard, and frankly it just got a little better.  A couple months ago, Bob Bandoni introduced us to Students Shoulder to Shoulder.  Their tagline is “The International School of Global Citizenship”.  Rather than try to explain what that entails, we just urge you to investigate their website.  It’s meaningful.

Although the program is five or six years old, Bob explained that they were planning their first Global Solutions Forum here in Vail, in October.  The idea was to bring representatives together from the various NGO’s around the world and the schools who now participate with Shoulder to Shoulder.   The real purpose is simply to further their success and advance the mission.  It took all of about two minutes to recognize the value and importance of this effort.  In the context of our day to day preoccupation with our own lives and businesses, the opportunity to play some small part in something so meaningful was irresistible.

Last week, the Antlers was honored to host ten representatives from a number of the different schools that are now part of the Shoulder to Shoulder “alliance”.  Like some of the other worthy causes that the Antlers has adopted over the years, this was all done at no charge to the participants or their schools.  By helping making it affordable for them to participate in this conference, we like to think that the Antlers is playing a small part in the fulfillment of their mission.

Like all great ideas, Bob Bandoni and the others behind this effort see it as something much bigger.  It’s not just personal growth for the students, but rather a significant step on the path to making this a better world.  That’s a lofty goal, but one which the Antlers is really proud to be associated with.

The Antlers at Vail welcomes The 2013 MAGNETIC RESONANCE PHYSICS COURSE

Sunday, October 21st, 2012

 Dr. Emanuel Kanal

We are so proud to be the host hotel for Dr. Kanal’s MRI group.  Through the years, it’s been such a pleasure to work with Dr. Kanal and his staff.  Every attendee is amazed by Dr. Kanal’s knowledge and his teaching techniques. This course is highly recommend to radiologists, neurologists, cardiologists, physicists, technologists, industry specialists, and others who seek to understand how MR imaging works and how to clinically apply it.

Below please find a small description about his course:

Since 1985, Emanuel Kanal has taught literally thousands of people the concepts underlying MR imaging physics and their clinical applications. His teaching style is informal, interactive, humorous, enthusiastic, energetic, and unique.  Among the unique aspects of this course is that it takes full advantage of the graphic, interactive format of his custom developed MR tutorial and simulator software programs, which permit real-time simulation of the effects of MR image parameter manipulation on the scanned images. The course will review basic MR imaging principles, including explanations and applications of such parameters as T1, T2, T2*, proton density, TR, TE, TI, flip angle, contrast agents, relaxivity, etc.

It will review spin echo, gradient echo, and inversion recovery (including FLAIR and STIR) imaging techniques and it will lead into a number of more complex MR issues, including several hours dedicated to MR angiography, diffusion and perfusion weighted imaging, sequence optimization techniques for high relaxivity MR contrast agents, and MR spectroscopy.

Kanal is recognized as one of the most sought after MR educators in the world today; is the first to have developed, applied, and presented dynamic bolus contrast-enhanced MRA; and is the pre-eminent physician authority on MR safety issues. As is his style, Kanal will be available to answer questions and clarify concepts at and between each conference session. Participants will leave this conference with a solid understanding of complex but clinically vital MR imaging, angiography, and spectroscopy physics principles and how to apply them to routine clinical diagnostic patient care.

The Antlers is offering amazing rates for attendees of this course.  For more information, a brochure is available for you: Dr. Kanal’s 2013 Vail Course Brochure

Dynamic Skiing for Life Seminar

Wednesday, October 17th, 2012

Dynamic Skiing for Life Program with Margaret McIntyre is coming to the Antlers at Vail this December 9 – 13, 2012!

The Antlers at Vail will be hosting a great new program, new to us at least, that helps get the body ready for the ski season or any other activity. Margaret McIntyre owner of Integrated Movement has been practicing the Feldenkrais Method for over 30 years and is bringing her knowledge and skills back to the Vail Valley for a four day class. What is the Feldenkrais Method you ask? Great questions! According to Margaret, “The Feldenkrais Method® is not medicine, not chiropractic, not massage and not yoga; instead it is a powerful, innovative and effective learning system. You learn how to replace old redundant movement patterns with newer more useful ones. You will discover that you have the capacity to become more skillful and improve your quality of life as you mature and age.” Margaret lived and worked in the Vail Valley for 20 years, now based out of Maui (not too shabby of a relocation!) Margaret comes back to Vail once a year to continue teaching her seminars.  The Antlers is so pleased to be hosting this wonderful program!

“As the Antlers Turn”……….23

Friday, October 5th, 2012

As previously reported, Stella Dasko hit a golf shot heard round the world when she visited last August.  Maybe it wasn’t heard round the world, but it was definitely talked about in the Antlers Lobby that day.  It was a hole in one on the 15th hole at Vail Municipal Golf Course.  You can read all about it in the “As the Antlers Turn”, #22.

I just found out that Stella didn’t tell me the whole story when I interviewed her that day.

I’ve heard it said that after a hole in one , the golfer that accomplishes the feat is obligated to buy a round for everyone in the clubhouse.  I’ve only heard this and have never received a drink from a happy fellow or female after such an accomplishment.  Lord knows, I’ve never had to oblige personally since the closest I’ve ever gotten to a hole in one has been on the Vail Putt-Put track.

Anyway, a nice young fellow from the golf course stopped by the other day and dropped off a bottle of whiskey.  He asked for Stella.  “She’s in Toronto” was the reply at the front desk.

“Could you be sure she gets this?” and the young golf pro handed the decorative bottle to us for safe keeping.

Apparently the new tradition , at least at the Vail Course, is to order and deliver a bottle of Gentleman Jack with some pretty fancy engraving on it.  That’s the part that Stella left out of the interview.

Too shy?  Too much attention on her?  Probably.

Personally, I would be camping out waiting for delivery.  She didn’t even tell us it was coming.

We called Stella and told her it had been delivered and that we all toasted in her honor that afternoon.  (Just kidding.  We toasted after work.)  (Just kidding.  We locked it up and are waiting for her and John to return.)

It’s here Stella and we’re waiting……

The Case of the Missing Cruiser  or Who’s the Dumbest Criminal in Vail?

The Antlers is always trying to enhance the guest experience, so without even a second thought, we purchased two, brand spanking new, cruiser bikes from Performance Sports two months ago.  The idea being, if you want to get around town in a Cadillac Cruiser, of course we would “be more than happy to let you hop on and go. Just return them where you found them is all we ask.”  The rules seem simple enough don’t they?  Until one of the Manhattan Deluxe Flyers with 6 speed transmission, cushioned leather seat, and an optional woven basket for carrying goodies, goes missing!

The e-mails were sent out asking for an explanation.  Then we started asking for clues.  The Cruiser was gone for two weeks and the situation evolved from “misplaced bicycle” to “stolen property”.

The poor guy was parked in its place all alone. He missed his friend.

There was no response to our pleas and the case was close to being categorized as “unsolved”.  Until I went to Ace Hardware and saw what I had a hard time believing.

The missing Cruiser was parked in a bike rack in front of the store. I thought to myself “Somebody steals a bike and parks it where everyone looking for it can see it.  This perpetrator is really stupid.”

What was this thief thinking? Did he want to be caught?

I leave the scene and go back to the Antlers where I tell Rob “I just found the bike.  I guess I’ll call the police and let them know where it is.”

Rob says something like ” Hurry up in case the thing disappears again”.

Molly, who is working the front desk says “Greg, you’re busy.  I’ll call the police.”

“No problem Molly.  I’ll take care of it” was my response to her (and I wondered why she was trying to be so helpful).

Officer Rich Sardelli of the Vail Police Department, wanted only a few details like make and model, color, serial numbers and any distinguishing marks (like an option basket for goodies).

I told him that I would have to call him back because some of the information was upstairs.  “I’ll be on duty until 3 AM” he told me.

I proceed to the front office and acting a little impatient, I say to Molly “officer Sardelli wants information that I’m not sure where to find it.  I wonder if Rob has serial #’s for those bikes.”

Molly follows me back to the file room and says “Greg….I…I have…I have a ….a confession to make and please don’t be mad.”

I wanted to wipe a tear from her eye, but she wasn’t crying.  “What is it Molly?”

She looked down at the floor and shuffled her right foot back and forth and said “I’m the one who took the bike and parked it there.  I kept forgetting about it, but I promise to bring it back tonight.  Please don’t tell Rob.”

I could not control my laughter and said ”I’m not going to tell Rob.  I’m going to tell the world wide web and don’t worry, Rob doesn’t read the Internet.  He’ll never know.”

I called officer Sardelli back and told him of the “closed case”.

Before we hung up he said “You want me to come over there and arrest her?  I’d be happy to.”

I thought only for a second.  “Ohhhh, that would be fun.”        Greg
