It’s begining to look a lot like winter!

With about 10 inches falling since Saturday night and more coming down and on the way it’s starting to look like winter around Vail. Just in time for the Snowdaze festivities and Vail’s 50th anniversary celebrations there is plenty to do on and off the mountain this week.

No spring party pics for you just yet (they’re coming), just some boring shots of the ski slopes. But hey, people have been asking so here are some photos for you. Photos are from March 23rd. Spring conditions here and lots of corn snow. No need to get out super early as it is best to wait a little later into the day until the snow softens up.

Ski the Minturn Mile ski run

Skiing the Minturn Mile from Vail mountain down to the town of Minturn is one of the classic Apre ski activities in Vail. Be forewarned, it is for advanced skiers only that are familiar with the back-country, prepared for back-country skiing, can make quick turns in deep powder and are physically fit . It starts with a hike to Ptarmigan ridge on the West side of Vail’s Sun Down Bowl. After a break at the top it is time to head through the gate and some powder skiing. Make sure you have someone that is familiar with the trail and the area to guide you. Once you get all the way down you have a hike to the Minturn Saloon for some beer and margaritas. To get back to Vail grab the bus back or better yet, have a friend pick you up. You won’t be in any condition to drive anyhow…

Vail’s Milt’s face in the Back Bowls

The wind up on Vail mountain blew the snow around this past Saturday and Sunday but there is still good skiing to be had in the Back Bowls. There is Colorado snow coming in on Tuesday per Opensnow. Most of the eastern facing slopes had the best snow conditions. Here was a quick picture from Sunday’s ski time.

Stefan and Alice Kafka visited us from Vienna Austria this past week and made a few runs in Vail’s China Bowl. Another 4 inches of snow came down on Thursday with more predicted throughout this week in Vail Colorado. Vail snow conditions with 11 + inches of new powder

Vail ski area reported 11 inches of new snow this morning at 5:30am and we probably received another 3-4 inches on Vail mountain throughout the day. Vail’s ski conditions are fantastic. It has been a bit of a wait. Most of the Back Bowls opened today but there are still a few sections closed waiting for a bit more snow. Pictures below are just some quick shots to give a quick eye for the snow conditions. Nice and soft.

January 22, a bit of a Vail powder snow day, 9+ inches

Finally, we are getting a bit of a turn on the snow. 9+inches today and it snowed pretty good throughout the day so maybe another 3 inches or so will be reported on tomorrow’s Vail snow report. I did a few runs with Antlers at Vail condominium owner John Taylor over in Game Creek Bowl. The sun will be out the rest of today and tomorrow and then perhaps we get a bit more snow again on Tuesday. Chair 5 opened today, but mainly with skiing in Sun Up bowl. From what we could see they have not opened Sun Down bowl. Portions of Blue Sky Basin and China are open. We are just about 2300 acres open with more to come. Chris Ratzlaff

January 6, 2012 quick Vail ski report

We are waiting for more snow but we are certainly skiing in Vail everyday! Some pictures and a video for you below. I joined a couple of guests from New York City this afternoon. We mainly stuck to runs in Northwoods and Chair 14 (Sourdough lift). The western U.S. has been very dry this winter and yet we are open with 1500 acres. Conditions are hard packed until we receive some more snow, so stick to the groomed runs for now. You can ski the bumps (and we do) but they are icy between the tops. We are hoping for 2-5 inches by Sunday morning.
