A few years later, we converted 70 wood-burning fireplaces to cleaner, gas logs at a cost of $70,000. This accomplishment is one that literally fills our lungs with pride every single day of the year - wood smoke was a major part of Vail's air pollution. Likewise, our water wise policies (for example, we allow our guests to participate by limiting the frequency of towel changes) and the efficient equipment in our units and central laundry help conserve the mountain purity of our rivers and streams. We are active participants with Vail's Green star program , the Eagle Valley Alliance and the Town of Vail recycling program. Recycling is not a profitable venture in a small and relatively remote area, to say the least. Curbside pickup is expensive, the operators of the recycling center simply cannot afford to do it for everybody. So when the Antlers van and Antlers employees arrive to shuttle recyclables to the collection point, it's a service to the community and environment. And, several years ago, the Town of Vail selected The Antlers, from among two dozen entries in the business category, as the inaugural recipient of the Mauri Nottingham Award. This environmental award was especially meaningful because of Mauri Nottingham's incredible hard work and selfless championing of the environment. He started the local recycling program and is singularly responsible for its success. |
