Leadville was one of the world’s great mining camps.  Incredible wealth was generated in this two-mile-high city from gold, lead, silver, and zinc mining and smelting.  ‘Everyone’ came to Leadville, including Presidents Grant and Theodore Roosevelt.  Houdini, Oscar Wilde, Buffalo Bill Cody, and the Ziegfield Follies performed at the Tabor Opera House which still has tours of this 1879 structure.  Institutions such as the Guggenheims, the May Company, Marshall Fields, and Dow Jones, got their start in Leadville. Musical productions The Ballad of Baby Doe and the Unsinkable Mollie Brown were based on Leadville residents.  The world’s largest molybdenum deposit is still being mined nearby.
